FRP 281 Fire Prevention Inspection


Lecture Hours: 3
Credits: 3

Covers methods of contemporary fire prevention inspection practices. Includes preparation, pre-approach information, written inspection notices, relations with owners and occupants, and compliances.

Prerequisite: FRP 172 , FRP 260 , and FRP 266 ; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be passed with a grade of C or better.)
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Apply of general fire safety code requirements and regulations to fire prevention inspection. 
  2. Describe license and permit requirements within state and local jurisdictions. 
  3. Convey the established fire codes appeals procedure and the judicial review process. 
  4. Identify the components and responsibilities to be considered in preparing for and conducting an inspection (i.e. personal appearance, equipment, scheduling, access, building history, occupancy history, etc.). 
  5. Describe the impact of technical expertise, personal appearance, and attitude on public relations towards fire prevention efforts. 
  6. Identify the purpose of inspection records, describe their contents, accurately complete them, and explain the employing jurisdiction’s record filing and maintenance system. 
  7. Describe the purpose of and procedures used in performing a fire prevention inspection. 
  8. Describe the purpose of an engine company fire prevention inspection. 
  9. Initiate corrective procedures for fire hazards discovered during fire inspections. 
  10. Explain building construction classifications and how they are determined. 
  11. Describe how buildings are classified for inspection and code enforcement purposes. 
  12. Describe the purpose of emergency evacuation plans and develop plans for various building occupancies. 
  13. Explain the procedures required for the processing of plans and specifications for a local jurisdiction authority. 
  14. Describe regulations relative to the distribution, location, inspection, maintenance, and operation of portable fire extinguishers. 
  15. Identify inspection requirements and maintenance procedures regarding installed fire protection equipment (i.e. automatic sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, fire department connections, etc.). 
  16. Identify the regulatory labeling and placarding systems for various types and quantities of hazardous materials currently in use. 
  17. Describe local and state codes and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials.
