GEG 207 Geography on the United States and Canada Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Examines the natural and cultural environments of the U.S. and Canada, including climate, vegetation, landform regions, natural resource issues, population and settlement patterns.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Locate major cities, states, provinces, territories, and other important cultural features on a map of the U.S. and Canada.
- Locate major landforms, rivers, vegetation and climate regions, and other important physical features on a map of the U.S. and Canada.
- Explain how the pattern of landforms is related to the distribution of climates, vegetation, and rivers.
- Describe the population characteristics and distribution of both countries.
- Summarize the political and economic geography of the U.S. and Canada.
- Compare and contrast the physical and cultural environments of the western and eastern parts of the continent.
- List the most important natural resources of the two countries and evaluate the controversies surrounding their management.
- Identify key features of the various geographic regions of the two countries.
- Evaluate and discuss the future challenges and opportunities the region faces as its population grows and its economy changes.
- Explain how a geographic perspective can help provide a better understanding of current events in North America.
