HM 230 Health Information Management Practicum Lab Hours: 6 Credits: 3
Provides workplace experience in a healthcare-related setting. Covers policies and procedures in tasks set forth by site, follow release of information guidelines, participate in quality assessment, develop skills using various software applications, and to help students perform as an entry-level coding professional.
Prerequisite: HM 112 , HM 115 , HM 117 , HM 170 , HM 270 or consent of instructor. (All courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.) Student Learning Outcomes:
- Participate in quality assessment activities (information integrity).
- Effectively apply laws, regulations, and ethical principles to release of information.
- Show knowledge of accreditation or licensing standards and use effectively to determine compliance.
- Develop knowledge of health record content that is applied to effective quantitative and qualitative analysis (quality assessment activities).
- Develop and show skill in using applications software to accomplish tasks.
- Perform a 40-hour coding project that will encompass inpatient, outpatient, and surgical patient types to be overseen by Chemeketa HIM staff.
