JPN 102 First Year Japanese, Term 2

Credits: 4

Introduces the Japanese language (including listening, speaking, reading and writing) and Japanese culture (including geography, customs, daily life, heritage and literature), facilitated by the study of vocabulary, grammar, short readings and guided conversation. Instructor and students use Japanese as the primary language of the class.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115  or higher; or WR 090  (or concurrent enrollment), or WR 115  or higher; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.)
Recommended: JPN 101 , or one year of high school Japanese. (All course must be completed with a grade of C or better.)

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Respond to everyday conversation within limited topics, including survival situations. 
  2. Talk about personal information and class schedules and describe and identify locations. 
  3. Interpret simple, short reading materials written in three different writing systems: Hiragana, Katakana, and some Kanji. 
  4. Demonstrate the appropriate use of Hiragana, Katakana and about 70 Kanji characters. 
  5. Use Japanese grammar sufficient to carry out the speaking, reading, and writing functions. 
  6. Describe selected aspects of the Japanese people, their culture and traditions.
