STAT 244 Probability and Statistics 2

Lecture Hours: 4
Credits: 4

Offers a second course open to all majors covering testing two-sample problems, linear regression and correlation, chi-squared goodness of fit tests, one-way and two-way analysis of variance.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115  (or higher), or completion of WR 090  (or higher); and completion of STAT 243Z  (or higher) or equivalent course as determined by instructor; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.)
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Use mathematical problem-solving techniques to organize, represent and analyze data. Techniques include the use of  and are not limited to test the difference among means, variances and proportions for two populations, apply correlation and regression to real-life problems, utilize the chi-square test when appropriate, employ one-way and two-way analysis of variance given sample data, Test the difference among population distributions using nonparametric statistics.
  2. Create models of real-world situations as it applies to probability and statistical methods.
  3. Use inductive reasoning to develop mathematical conjectures using statistical hypothesis tests. Use deductive reasoning to verify and apply mathematical arguments involving statistical hypothesis tests.
  4. Make mathematical connections to, and solve problems from, other disciplines as it applies to statistics.
  5. Use oral and written skills to individually and collaboratively communicate about applications as it applies to statistics.
  6. Use appropriate technology to analyze mathematical problems and to enhance mathematical thinking and understanding of statistics; and judge the reasonableness of results.

Statewide General Education Outcomes:

  1. Use appropriate mathematics to solve problems.
  2. Recognize which mathematical concepts are applicable to a scenario, apply appropriate mathematics and technology in its analysis, and then accurately interpret, validate, and communicate the results.
