PH 201 General Physics Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Offers the first term of a three-term sequence of introductory algebra-based college physics. Includes kinematics, Newton’s laws, energy, momentum, and rotation.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher); and placement into MTH 251 (or higher), or completion of MTH 112Z (or higher); cocurrent registration in PH 214 or successful completion of course; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.) Student Learning Outcomes:
- Apply mathematical and physical principles to specific problems based on identified physics topics.
- Evaluate reliability and relevance of physical evidence gathered by self and others. Distinguish among science, pseudoscience, and other fields.
- Apply mathematical and physical principles to observed, measured, and given physical data to make predictions and explain past observations.Explain relevance of physical principles to problem-solving.
General Education Outcomes:
- Gather, comprehend, and communicate scientific and technical information in order to explore ideas, models, and solutions and generate further questions.
- Apply scientific and technical modes of inquiry, individually, and collaboratively, to critically evaluate existing or alternative explanations, solve problems, and make evidence-based decisions in an ethical manner.
- Assess the strengths and weaknesses of scientific studies and critically examine the influence of scientific and technical knowledge on human society and the environment.
