ES 173 Principles of Emergency Services

Explores the philosophy and history of emergency services. Presents the history of loss of life and property in fire, major medical emergencies, and natural disasters. Covers the responsibility of emergency services in a community, the roles and responsibilities of a paramedic and firefighter, an overview of the ICS system, and the organization and function of emergency services agencies and allied organizations, education, and certification. Develop an education plan and outline a possible career path.

Student Learning Outcomes:
 

  1. Illustrate and explain the history of the fire service.
  2. Illustrate and explain the history of pre-hospital emergency medical services.
  3. Compare and contrast the components and development of the fire and emergency services.
  4. Define the mission and service delivery of the Fire and EMS services.
  5. Demonstrate familiarity with education, certification and licensure associated with Fire and EMS services.
  6. Analyze careers in fire and emergency services.
  7. Seek employment opportunities and understand basic qualifications for employment. Develop a possible career path into the fire service and/ or emergency medical services.
