AUM 151 Basic Automotive Engines

Lecture Hours: 3
Lab Hours: 6
Credits: 5

Covers construction, working principles, and methods of servicing a gasoline and diesel internal combustion engine. Stresses proper use of tools, torque wrenches, micrometers, and equipment. Discusses theory and operation of the makeup of simple and complex machines involving levers, cams, inertia, and momentum.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Observe and obey all shop safety requirements and regulations as necessary.
  2. Describe and demonstrate the correct use of various hand tools used in automotive engine service and repair.
  3. Demonstrate the correct use of various precision measuring tools used in automotive engine service and repair
  4. Describe the operation of simple and complex machines related to gasoline internal combustion engines.
  5. Describe and demonstrate the ability to correctly diagnose engine noises
  6. Clean both interior and individual components of an engine.
  7. Disassemble and inspect an assigned engine in the standard sequence.
  8. Detect failures or abnormal wear patterns within an engine and implement the possible corrections.
  9. Apply industry standard procedures to assemble individual engine components.
  10. List the faults, factory specifications, and actual measurements of an assigned engine.
