CJ 261E Law Enforcement Related Experience 5 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 6 Credits: 6
LERE 5 focuses on topics, training, and practical application covered in the LERE coursework that aligns with best practices and the most modern techniques used in the law enforcement profession. Involves an overview of criminal Oregon Revised Statutes as related to person crimes and their investigation, successful testimonial evidence collection through the learning and applying of Cognitive Interviewing techniques, and the completion of a probable cause statement/affidavit. Discusses less lethal weapons and the case law related to its use, firearms safety and basic handling and movement, and tactical and combat care. Covers officer court testimony, defensive tactics skill building, building clearing tactics, high risk traffic stops, physical fitness training, confrontation simulations involving an actively resistant subject, and the flight of drones inside buildings.
Prerequisite: CJ 261D with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Locate criminal person to person crimes in the Oregon Criminal Code Book.
- Describe the purpose for tactical care and combat lifesaving skills in a hostile officer encounter and demonstrate the skills needed to ensure officer survivability.
- Describe the importance of an officer’s testimony in the court or legal process of the judicial system.
- Describe the importance of a probable cause statement/affidavit and perform the skill of writing this type of police report.
- Perform an Intermediate Criminal Investigation following all guidelines as set through statute, Constitutional law, and court direction.
- Perform learned defensive tactics skills and less lethal use, while abiding under current use of force case law, in a confrontational contact when the subject is actively resisting arrest.
- Perform a High-Risk Traffic Stop utilizing standard safety practices and following all court guidelines and law related to such stops.
