CVL 232 Applied Statics and Strength of Materials

Lecture Hours: 4
Credits: 4

Covers classification and analysis of internal and external forces induced in structures by various types of loading. Introduces structural factors such as centroids, moment of inertia, stress and deflection. Covers the design of structures based on structural analysis using equilibrium, stress, and deflection concepts.

Prerequisite: MTH 082  or MTH 112Z ; and PH 121 ; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.)
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Classify and represent common structural loading scenarios using schematics, vectors and free body diagrams.
  2. Apply equilibrium concepts to identify unknown loads and reactions.
  3. Determine internal forces and resulting stresses within structures.
  4. Calculate stress, strain, deflection, force, and area properties of materials.
  5. Construct shear and moment diagrams.
  6. Size simple structural members based on stress, deflection and loading requirements.
  7. Apply engineering format to all calculations and documentation.
