DEN 161 Dental Assisting Practicum 1

Credits: 3

Provides supervised clinical experience in basic chairside assisting procedures, including material manipulation, oral evacuation, instrument transfer, charting and patient management at the Oregon Health Sciences University School of Dentistry.

Prerequisite: Second term standing in the Dental Assisting program.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Participate in basic chairside assisting procedures with an increase in self-confidence and initiative. 
  2. Demonstrate appropriate professional and ethical behaviors.  
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of equipment and instruments needed for various chairside procedures. 
  4. Operate the high and low velocity oral evacuators and the three-way syringe efficiently to maintain a clear operating field. (Psychomotor: Operate) 
  5. Recognize and transfer instruments required for various procedures. (Affective: Receiving) 
  6. Mix dental materials as required for immediate use at chairside. (Psychomotor: Mix) 
  7. Demonstrate dental care that minimizes risk of harm to patient, self, and others.
