DEN 172 Expanded Functions

Presents the theory and practice of legal Expanded Functions for dental assistants. Includes discussion, demonstration, and practical application of the following: intra-extra oral exam, coronal polish; topical fluoride; amalgam and composite polish; provisional coverage; suture removal; cement removal; pit and fissure sealant placement, and tooth whitening.

Prerequisite: Third-term standing in the Dental Assisting program.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Apply correct clinical technique for the following expanded functions: (Psychomotor: Demonstrate). 
  2. Coronal polish and apply topical fluoride. 
  3. Polish amalgam/composite restorations 
  4. Fit and temporarily cement provisional restoration 
  5. Remove provisional coverage and clean teeth for final cementation. 
  6. Remove supragingival cement utilizing hand instruments 
  7. Place pit and fissure sealants 
  8. Perform teeth whitening 
  9. Identify and demonstrate elements of a patient intra- and extra-oral examination.  (Cognitive: Knowledge)
