DEN 174 Dental Radiology 2

Lecture Hours: 1
Lab Hours: 3
Credits: 2

Continues DEN 164 . Allows students to take additional adult and pediatric (pedodontic) manikin films using low-dose technique. Students develop skills in patient management and improve radiographic techniques by completing at least one full mouth patient x-ray series. Includes information in taking pediatric images, images in edentulous areas, images taken while the patient is in a supine position, endodontic images, occlusal views, and extra-oral images. Students learn utilization of the panoramic x-ray unit, film duplicators, and automatic film processors. Students expose and evaluate all Images, and are eligible to take the State x-ray examination upon successful completion of DEN 164  and DEN 174.

Prerequisite: Third term standing in the Dental Assisting program.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Prepare x-ray operatory to receive a patient. (Psychomotor: Prepare).
  2. Demonstrate correct exposure, processing, mounting, duplication, and evaluation techniques of radiographs. (Psychomotor: Demonstrate).
  3. Approach the patient with care, giving special attention to patient comfort. (Affective: Characterizing).
  4. Comply with radiation safety regulations when making exposures. (Affective: Responding).
  5. Demonstrate correct receptor placement and exposure techniques for various images. (Psychomotor: Demonstrate).
  6. Describe techniques and errors related to patient positioning, exposure and processing for panoramic radiography.  (Cognitive: Comprehension).
  7. Demonstrate correct technique to localize a foreign object. (Psychomotor: Demonstrate).
  8. Explain the basic concepts related to digital radiography.  (Cognitive: Comprehension).
  9. Identify the characteristics of diagnostic radiographic images. (Affective: Organizing).
  10. Apply technical theory to complete a minimum of 18 diagnostic patient radiographs (Cognitive: Application).
