DSL 201 Diesel Technology 4

Covers Preventative Maintenance Inspection (PMI) of vehicles, Department of Transportation (DOT) out of service criteria, PM scheduling, lubricants and Winterizing. Covers Detroit Diesel Electronic Control (DDEC) operation and diagnostics. Examines concepts in medium/heavy duty truck brake systems, suspension, and steering. Covers air brake systems, hydraulic brake systems, truck foundation brakes, antilock brakes, automatic slack adjusters, wheels, tires and fifth wheels. Emphasizes safety and the use of service manuals and textbooks. Prepares students to confidently diagnose and tune-up a diesel engine in industrial environment. This is an outcome-based course utilizing a lecture/lab format and includes videos, workbooks, demonstrations, lectures, and hands on learning.

Prerequisite: DSL 103  with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Apply knowledge of diesel engine diagnostic tune up. 
  2. Analyze and diagnose diesel engines support systems. 
  3. Apply working knowledge about the tools and materials needed to properly analyze and tune up diesel engines. 
  4. Disassemble, inspect, reassemble, and understand components of air brake systems, truck foundation brakes, antilock brake systems, steering systems, suspension systems, wheels and tires, and fifth wheels. 
  5. Use needed tools to properly repair and maintain brake systems, steering systems, suspension systems, wheels, tires, and fifth wheels. 
  6. Diagnose failures and practice researching the failure symptoms in service manuals and other sources to research and diagnose failures 
  7. Use protective gear and safe procedures in all work areas. 


Content Outline
  • Theory of Engine Operation 
    • Develop knowledge and an understanding of basic operation and development of diesel engines. 
    • Learn engine systems & troubleshooting. 
    • Learn about engine lube, cooling, fuel, exhaust and induction systems. 
  • Diesel Engine Tune-Up 
    • Develop knowledge and an understanding of diesel engine tune-up. 
  • Diesel Engine Diagnostics 
    • Develop knowledge and an understanding of diesel engine troubleshooting. 
  • PMI/DOT Inspections 
    • Learn how to complete a DOT inspection. 
    • Learn how to complete a Preventative Maintenance Inspection  
  • PM Scheduling and Servicing 
    • Learn how to perform a vehicle Preventative Maintenance Schedule and service. 
  • DDEC System and Diagnostics 
    • Learn to adjust valves and injectors. 
    • Learn to use service literature. 
    • Learn to use diagnostics software. 
    • Learn controls and components. 
    • Perform system testing and diagnostics. 
  • Knowledge of Air Brake Systems. 
    • Learn the basic operation of compressed air as used in air brake, single air brake, and dual brake systems. 
    • Learn and demonstrate maintenance and service of air brake components. 
  • Knowledge of Truck Foundation Brakes. 
    • Learn about and identify components of s-cam brakes, slack adjusters, wedge brakes and disk brake systems. 
    • Learn about, troubleshoot and demonstrate how WABCO ABS, Bendix ABS, and Midland-Grau ABS systems work. 
  • Knowledge of Steering Systems. 
    • Learn a knowledge of suspension systems. 
    • Learn to identify parts and explain load and torque of spring, torsion bar, air bag, and equalizing beam suspensions. 
  • Knowledge of Wheels and Tires 
    • Learn an understanding of wheels and tires. 
    • Learn operation and maintenance of wheel and tire components. 
  • Knowledge of Fifth Wheels 
    • Learn an understanding of fifth wheels.
