ECE 142 Textiles With Children

Explores an approach for the use of textiles with children preschool-3rd grade. Involves hands-on experiences with a wide variety of textile activities. Includes discussion of planning and implementing developmentally appropriate textile activities with an emphasis on the value of such experiences across domains. Includes experiences for children of different ages, cultures, and abilities.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate the ability to plan and set-up a wide variety of textile experiences for children.  
  2. Curate a repertoire of textile experiences for children of all abilities. 
  3. Identify and articulate benefits of textile experiences for children of all abilities. 
  4. Describe the teacher’s role and realistic, age-appropriate expectations for textile activities. 


Content Outline
  • Textile experiences for children preschool -3rd grade. 
    • Explore reused, natural, purchased and recycled materials.  
    • Experiment with Weaving, dyeing, sewing techniques. 
    • Child-directed learning and development of related skills for children preschool - 3rd grade. 
    • Create an environment for discovery including ; sensory experiences and skill building  for individual children.  
    • Examine open-ended experiences with textile materials that promote all domains of development including the inclusion of children of diverse interests and abilities. 
    • Explore textile activities to promote classroom community.
