EMT 151 Emergency Medical Technology, Part 1

Provides instruction at the level of Emergency Medical Technician, a vital link in the chain of the health care system. Includes all skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care as outlined by scope of practice established by the Oregon Medical Board. Serves as the first of a two-part course in a series of courses making up a national and state EMS training program.

Prerequisite: Completion of placement testing for writing skills at WR 080  or higher, and math at MTH 052  or higher. Must be concurrently enrolled BLS Health Care Providers CPR course. Must meet standards as set by the Oregon State EMS Office for licensure which includes health, driving, immunizations, and criminal record check.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Evaluate the nature and seriousness of the patient’s condition or extent of injuries. 
  2. Implement and perform appropriate emergency medical care based on assessment findings of the patient’s condition. 
  3. Describe the Emergency Medical Care System including the role and responsibilities of the EMT. 
  4. Define medical/legal terms that apply to the EMT. 
  5. Relate basic knowledge of human body systems, anatomy, physiology and topographic anatomy to emergency medical procedures. 
  6. Perform crucial techniques of airway management. 
  7. Demonstrate appropriate verbal, non-verbal and written communications for EMS personnel.
