FR 101 First Year French, Term 1 Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Introduces the French language (including listening, speaking, reading and writing) and Francophone culture (including geography, customs, daily life, heritage and literature), facilitated by the study of vocabulary, grammar, short readings and guided conversation. Instructor and students use French as the primary language of the class.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 or higher; or WR 090 (or concurrent enrollment), or WR 115 or higher; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.) Student Learning Outcomes:
- Respond simply and logically to spoken words and phrases.
- Respond simply and logically to simple oral questions and statements supported by context and redundancy.
- Pronounce words understandably.
- Orally list objects and activities; identify and describe people and objects.
- Interpret written words and phrases, including cognates.
- Interpret main ideas from simple written text through repeated reading and contextual clues.
- Transcribe and spell words accurately.
- Compose written lists, questions, and simple sentences.
- Interpret a few behaviors and basic nonverbal cues in very limited situations.
- Describe selected aspects of the geography, history, artistic heritage, and cultural practices of the French-speaking world.
