FYE 105 Creating College Success


Lecture Hours: 2
Credits: 2

Develops the skills needed to succeed in college. Builds skills that allow students to manage their time, their emotions, and their workload. Promotes building healthy relationships and accessing college resources. Introduces attitudes and beliefs that improve confidence and college success. Recommended for first year students across all fields.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 080  or higher; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Use self-awareness strategies to make wise choices related to college and life situations. 
  2. Describe the learning expectations for students at the college level and how it impacts their approach to studying. 
  3. Explore a variety of time management tools and strategies and implement those that help promote a college/life balance. 
  4. Use emotional intelligence and self-regulation skills to manage stress, reduce test anxiety, and increase motivation. 
  5. Demonstrate interdependence by engaging with college resources, learning with others, and respecting differences. 
  6. Identify thoughts and actions that align with a growth mindset and improve personal agency.

  • Use self-awareness strategies to make wise choices related to college situations. 
    • Understand the culture of college 
    • Identify choices that promote college success 
    • Assess personal strengths, weaknesses, resources, and needs 
    • Engage in a decision-making process related to college situations 
  • Describe the learning expectations for students at the college level and how it impacts their approach to studying. 
    • Distinguish active learning from passive learning 
    • Recognize the time demands of active learning 
  • Explore a variety of time management tools and strategies and identify those that help promote a college/life balance.

    • Reducing distractions

    • Analyzing tasks for time demand (e.g., backwards planning)

    • Daily to-do list
