GEG 202 World Regional Geography: The Developing World Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Introduces the physical and cultural geography of the developing world (Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and South, East, and Southeast Asia). Emphasizes major geographic themes and concepts, including population change, natural resource use, environmental concerns, economic development, geopolitical conflicts, and cultural perceptions.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Locate major cities, countries, mountain ranges, rivers, and other cultural and physical features on a map of each region.
- Explain the differences between more and less developed countries and categorize countries based on various indicators of development.
- Describe the physical and cultural geography of major countries in the developing world.
- Identify key geographic features of the various regions in the developing world.
- Explain some of the most important geopolitical issues in these regions, analyze various positions and options, and evaluate their possibility for resolution.
- Inventory each region’s most important natural resources and discuss and evaluate the controversies surrounding their use and management.
- Evaluate and discuss the future challenges and opportunities each region faces as its population grows and its economy changes.
- Explain how a geographic perspective can help provide a better understanding of current world events.
