GEG 207 Geography on the United States and Canada


Lecture Hours: 4
Credits: 4

Examines the natural and cultural environments of the U.S. and Canada, including climate, vegetation, landform regions, natural resource issues, population and settlement patterns.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115  (or higher), or completion of WR 090  (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Locate major cities, states, provinces, territories, and other important cultural features on a map of the U.S. and Canada. 
  2. Locate major landforms, rivers, vegetation and climate regions, and other important physical features on a map of the U.S. and Canada. 
  3. Explain how the pattern of landforms is related to the distribution of climates, vegetation, and rivers. 
  4. Describe the population characteristics and distribution of both countries. 
  5. Summarize the political and economic geography of the U.S. and Canada. 
  6. Compare and contrast the physical and cultural environments of the western and eastern parts of the continent. 
  7. List the most important natural resources of the two countries and evaluate the controversies surrounding their management. 
  8. Identify key features of the various geographic regions of the two countries. 
  9. Evaluate and discuss the future challenges and opportunities the region faces as its population grows and its economy changes. 
  10. Explain how a geographic perspective can help provide a better understanding of current events in North America.
