HDF 247 Preschool Child Development

Credits: 3

Examines the principles of development as they apply to the young child ages 2 ½ to 6 years. Emphasizes typical and atypical development in the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional domains.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 090 ; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Define development in terms of major theories and basic concepts; explain factors related to biological and environmental risk/resilience and their potential effect on early development. 
  2. Describe physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development from 2 ½ to 6 years of age in both typically and atypically developing children. 
  3. Describe relationship-based interventions and routines-based/embedded interventions in the context of inclusive early childhood settings. 
  4. Observe and document growth and development in individual and/or group settings, and compare and contrast what is considered typical and atypical development in preschool aged children. 
  5. Articulate the legal, ethical, social, and cultural issues impacting child development. 
  6. Continue to identify with the early childhood profession and exhibit the attributes of a collaborative educational leader, including the acquisition of appropriate knowledge, skills, and dispositions.
