HE 250 Personal Health Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Presents basic information concerning the social, emotional, intellectual, physical, spiritual and environmental aspects of personal health and wellness. Emphasizes health enhancing skills and behaviors. Provides an opportunity to apply and practice decision-making models regarding personal health issues.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Create a self-monitoring system for one behavior.
- Compare illness and wellness behavior and relate to personal health.
- Identify decision-making skills and apply decision-making techniques to consumer issues.
- Evaluate stress management techniques that encourage wellness.
- Identify stress management techniques that reduce the chance of specific illness.
Additional learner outcomes from the following options will be discussed in class or chosen as part of project based learning:
- Define sexuality.
- List characteristics of mental health.
- Compare gender roles.
- List abusive aspects of tobacco.
- Compare substance use and abuse.
- Identify healthy fitness behaviors.
- Identify a personal fitness plan.
- Define aging and compare the stages of life.
- Construct a lifetime plan of action for aging, including death.
- Identify disease risk factors and behavior change strategies.
- Explore prevention strategies related to body’s defense system.
- Contract personal study of additional topics.
