HOR 215 Developing an Integrated Pest Management Program

Identifies steps for setting up an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program by following reasonable and logical procedures for each pest management situation through gathering information, interpreting data, creating a flexible management plan, making timely decisions, and taking the proper action. Communicates pest management decision effectively with colleagues and clients.

  • Determine the goals of the IPM program 
    • Establish monitoring guidelines for each pest 
    • Determine tolerance and action thresholds of pest activity 
  • Develop a plan including acceptable management strategies for specific plant/pest species 
    • Develop specific criteria for selection of pest management methods 
    • Include planned control methods 
      • Cultural controls 
      • Mechanical and physical controls 
      • Genetic controls 
      • Biological controls 
      • Pesticides 
    • Long-term rotation plans for pesticide usage  
    • Develop guidelines to aid in selecting the most effective pesticide for use in an IPM program 
  • Develop procedures to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of management actions 
    • Determine response times 
    • Establish periodic inspection, monitoring, and reporting system 
    • Establish a recordkeeping system 
  • Establish communication procedures that work for colleagues and clients
