JPN 101 First Year Japanese, Term 1


Lecture Hours: 4
Credits: 4

Introduces the Japanese language (including listening, speaking, reading and writing) and Japanese culture (including geography, customs, daily life, heritage and literature), facilitated by the study of vocabulary, grammar, short readings and guided conversation. Instructor and students use Japanese as the primary language of the class.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115  or higher; or WR 090  (or concurrent enrollment), or WR 115  or higher; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.)
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Respond to simple everyday conversation. 
  2. Engage in everyday spoken greetings and introductions, exchange personal information, talk about daily activities, and express likes and dislikes. 
  3. Interpret simple, short reading materials, written in two different writing systems: Hiragana and Katakana. 
  4. Write short letters using Hiragana and Katakana writing systems. 
  5. Describe selected aspects of the Japanese people, their culture and traditions.
