JPN 103 First Year Japanese, Term 3 Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Introduces the Japanese language (including listening, speaking, reading and writing) and Japanese culture (including geography, customs, daily life, heritage and literature), facilitated by the study of vocabulary, grammar, short readings and guided conversation. Instructor and students use Japanese as the primary language of the class.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 or higher; or WR 090 (or concurrent enrollment), or WR 115 or higher; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.) Recommended: JPN 102 , or two years of high school Japanese. (All course must be completed with a grade of C or better.)
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Respond to everyday conversation.
- Talk about schedule, daily activities, weekends, and holidays, weather, the four seasons, forecasting, hobbies, and leisure activities.
- Interpret simple, short materials written in three different writing systems: Hiragana, Katakana, and about 60 new Kanji characters.
- Write short letters using the appropriate Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji characters.
- Use Japanese grammar sufficient to carry out the above functions.
- Describe selected aspects of the Japanese people, their culture, and traditions.
