JPN 202 Second Year Japanese, Term 2


Lecture Hours: 4
Credits: 4

Provides extensive practice in all four language skills (reading, writing speaking, and listening). Includes cultural and literary readings and an in-depth review and expansion of basic Japanese grammar and vocabulary, as well as a broadening of the understanding of Japanese culture. All classroom interaction (both by instructor and students) takes place in Japanese.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115  or higher; or completion of WR 090  (or concurrent enrollment), or WR 115  or higher; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.)
Recommended: JPN 201 , or four years of high school Japanese. (With a grade of C or better.)


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Respond to a larger range of everyday conversation, within limited topics.
  2. Talk about everyday situations, focusing on the topics of travel and housing.
  3. Interpret more complex reading materials, including some authentic items.
  4. Write complex descriptions of things pertaining to themselves, using the Japanese writing system correctly, and the addition of 50 new Kanji characters.

 

Statewide General Education Outcomes:

  1. Interpret and engage in the Arts and Letters, making use of the creative process to enrich the quality of life. 
  2. Critically analyze values and ethics within a range of human experience and expression to engage more fully in local and global issues.

  • Chapter 1 
    • Talking about places you have travelled to, what you have seen and general impressions 
    • Asking for and giving advice about what to do and where to go 
    • Asking for and giving street directions 
    • Talking about travel schedules, timetables and modes of transportation 
    • Talking about rules (do’s and don’ts) 
  • Chapter 2 
    • Talking about where you live 
    • Describing your house, apartment and room 
    • Talking about household chores 
    • Talking about something you received from or gave to someone 
    • Giving advice as to what is better to do or not to do 
    • Talking about preparations and things done ahead of time
