LING 210 Introduction to Linguistics

Credits: 4

Examine the fundamentals of linguistic analysis: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, and explore the similarities and differences in the languages of the world. Explore language variation and language use and attitudes towards ethnic minorities and social dialects. Understand the process of language acquisition and language issues in the field of education.

Prerequisite: WR 115  with a grade of C or better; or concurrently enrolled; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic structure of English 
  2. Describe the phonological, morphological and syntactic structure of any language by using appropriate linguistics methods 
  3. Show an understanding as well as respect for diversity in language use and dialects of English 
  4. Understand and recognize the effects of cultural, economic, political and social environments on language 
  5. Show an understanding of language acquisition and development, and how this applies to teaching methodology in the classroom.
