MT 241 System Calibration and Standards

Lecture Hours: 1
Lab Hours: 2
Credits: 2

Presents the why’s and how’s for organizing, modifying, and improving the operation of industrial calibration and repair. Covers examination of the standards and criteria for evaluating a process control system or proposed laboratory. Offers a combination of practical information and hands-on experience, covering proper installation, calibration, and maintenance of electronic instruments. Builds on the characteristics of electronic control systems, including techniques for installing electronic instruments; and procedures for configuring and calibrating transmitters, transducers, and controllers in process control systems.

Prerequisite: ELT 100  or ELT 131 ; and MT 215 ; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.)
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Employ industry standard safety practices during installation, calibration, and maintenance procedures.
  2. Connect wiring in an electronic control loop.
  3. Select and operate test equipment to measure electrical properties and calibrate instruments.
  4. Calibrate electronic transmitters and controllers.
  5. Explain the importance of maintenance in the correct operation of instruments and control systems.
  6. Use manufacturer’s guidelines to configure instruments for specific process applications.
  7. Explain installation considerations and practices for instruments and control systems.
  8. Install electronic instruments using manufacturer’s guidelines and ISA’s recommended practices and procedures.
  9. Use piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID), wiring, schematic, and installation detail drawings to install, calibrate, and verify correct operation of instruments.
  10. Explain methods for reducing electrical hazards including use of intrinsically safe installation.
  11. Describe the trend toward using fieldbus systems and personal computers in process control.
  12. Explain the relevance of ISO 9000 standards to maintenance practices and procedures.
