MTH 060 Introductory Algebra

Lecture Hours: 4
Credits: 4

Gives students with no algebra background a strong, fundamental background in beginning algebra. Covers signed numbers, elementary algebraic expression manipulation and equation solving. Describes concepts using verbal, numerical, graphic, and symbolic forms.

Prerequisite: Placement into MTH 60; or equivalent course as determined by instructor; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Use mathematical problem-solving techniques involving positive and negative numbers and linear patterns. Techniques include the use of graphical, symbolic, narrative, and tabular representations.
  2. Create models of real-world situations using positive and negative numbers and linear patterns.
  3. Use inductive reasoning to develop mathematical conjectures involving positive and negative numbers and linear patterns. Use deductive reasoning to verify and apply mathematical arguments involving positive and negative numbers and linear patterns.
  4. Make mathematical connections to, and solve problems from, other disciplines involving representations of positive and negative numbers and linear patterns.
  5. Use oral and written skills to individually and collaboratively communicate about applications involving positive and negative numbers and linear patterns.
  6. Use appropriate technology to solve mathematical problems and to enhance their mathematical thinking and understanding of positive and negative numbers and linear patterns; and judge the reasonableness of their results.
