MTH 213 Elementary Mathematics 3 Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Presents the third course in a mathematics sequence designed for prospective elementary education teachers. Covers topics in geometry. Utilizes computer programs and manipulatives to deepen conceptual understanding.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher) or completion of WR 090 (or higher); and completion of MTH 212 (or higher) or equivalent course as determined by instructor; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.) Student Learning Outcomes:
- Use mathematical problem-solving techniques in the study of geometry, including the use of, but not limited to, concrete models, graphical, symbolic, narrative, and tabular representations.
- Create models of real-world situations as they apply to the teaching of geometry at the elementary level.
- Use inductive reasoning to develop mathematical conjectures in geometry. Use deductive reasoning to verify and apply mathematical arguments in geometry.
- Make mathematical connections to, and solve problems from, other disciplines as they apply to the teaching of geometry at the elementary level.
- Use oral and written skills to individually and collaboratively communicate about applications as they apply to the teaching of geometry at the elementary level.
- Use appropriate technology to solve mathematical problems and to enhance mathematical thinking and understanding of geometry at the elementary level.
- Conduct projects that encourage independent, nontrivial exploration of applications.
Statewide General Education Outcomes:
- Use appropriate mathematics to solve problems.
- Recognize which mathematical concepts are applicable to a scenario, apply appropriate mathematics and technology in its analysis, and then accurately interpret, validate, and communicate the results.
