MUS 216 Aural Skills 6 Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 2 Credits: 2
Provides instruction in advanced concepts of 20th century western harmony, as well as harmony of non-western music and American Vernacular music. Also provides practice in ear training, including but not limited to sight-singing, melodic dictation, and harmonic dictation.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher); and completion of MUS 215 ; or consent of the instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher.) Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate expertise in movable-do solfège in treble, alto, tenor, and bass clef.
- Sing and conduct treble, alto, tenor and bass clef melodies that employ the following: Blues, Ecclesiastical Modes, Non-Western Modes, Polytonality and Polymodality, Whole-Tone, Octatonic and other Non-Tonal Scales.
- Sing complex melodies incorporating all intervals and compound intervals.
- Aurally recognize a variety of harmonic sonorities (intervals, cadences, chord progressions, etc.).
- Notate music accurately and efficiently through dictation and transcription assignments.
