SLP 180 Survey of Speech and Language Disorders

Provides an overview of the profession of speech language pathology. Describes the nature of various speech, language, voice and hearing function and associated disorders. Covers communication development milestones. Includes the training, scope, and practice of a speech language pathologist and a speech language pathology assistant.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Review and explain the scope of practice of speech language pathology and the specific areas of Voice, Fluency, Articulation and Swallowing 
  2. Differentiate between the role,scope of practice, training, and licensing of a speech-language pathologist and a speech-language pathology assistant.  
  3. Identify associated professionals that may be part of multi-disciplinary teams 
  4. Explain the sequence of Language Development Milestones 
  5. Review and identify specific  Childhood and Adult Language Impairments 
  6. Summarize types of Speech Sound Disorders
  7. Differentiate between a langauge disorder vs a language difference
