SLP 182 Intervention Strategies for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants

Focuses on approaches to intervention that speech and language pathology assistants can use with children, adolescents, and adults within the limits of a specified scope of practice. Covers data and record keeping methodologies, and examples/creation of behavior modification systems based on baseline data and progression towards goal attainment. Reviews types of materials and approaches that are motivating for students/clients in different age groups and settings.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Record data using standard measures on target speech, language, communication, and feeding behaviors determined by a treatement plan as directed by SLP.
  2. Apply different intervention strategies to student/client feedback in response to different behaviors and make adjustments as needed. 
  3. Create a behavior modification plan using collected baseline data, ongoing cues and reinforcement to work towards goal attainment and modification of behavior. 
  4. Create and use various data forms to communicate student/client/patient progress.
  5. Describe different approaches to planning for and operating intervention groups of various sizes and from differing cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

  • Theories and approaches to behavior modification incoporating positive and negative reinforcement schedules. 
  • Approaches to encourage on-task behavior, cues and motivations that support intervention in speech langauge pathology.
  • Speciifc intervention and data collection strategies and models for articulation and speech sound disorders. 
  • Specific intervention and data collection strategies and models for language therapy with a vareity of clients/students/patients. 
  • Specific intervention strategies and models for data collection for voice, fluency and swallowing. 
  • Strategies in intervention for students/clients/patients from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
