SLP 290 SLPA Practicum 2

Credits: 3

Continues practicum for gaining direct clinical clock hours for speech language pathology students. Focuses on guided practice in speech language pathology assisting. Includes working with a speech language pathologist supervisor at one or more sites of service. Emphasizes more independent practice and demonstration of skill from the speech language pathology student. Includes continued improvement in creating lesson/treatment plans, delivering intervention and capturing data and progress from the clients/students/patients under the supervision of and incorporating input and feedback from the supervising clinician and the college instructor. 

Prerequisite: SLP 289  with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate effective pacing of language and speech intervention sessions.
  2. Provide stimuli and scaffolding technique to elicit target responses as prescribed by the supervisor.
  3. Follow a treatment protocol using stimulus materials as prescribed by the supervisor.
  4. Describe/document clinically relevant behaviors of the client and family.
  5. Prepare age-appropriate and culturally sensitive treatment materials matched to the developmental age and communication disorder in response to direction from the supervisor.
  6. Prepare and maintain client charts and records, and write progress reports using appropriate terminology of the profession.
  7. Accurately record target behaviors using different types of descriptive symbols.
  8. Provide levels and types of reinforcement for target behaviors identified by the supervisor.
  9. Elicit accurate production of target behaviors through use of appropriate correction responses to behavior and production by the client/student/patient.
  10. Use specified infection control procedures.
  11. Demonstrate knowledge of confidentiality processes including HIPAA, FERPA for client/student/patient as it pertains to various settings. 
  12. Review demonstration of competency as a speech-language pathology practicum student through cooperative completion of a provided competency based measure in conjunction with the supervising speech-language pathologist and the college instructor. 
  13. Accurately document direct clinical hours through models provided to prepare for application of state licensing and national certification as a speech-language pathology assistant.
