SOC 232 Death and Dying: A Socio-Cultural Perspective Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Introduces the study of death and dying from a socio-cultural frame of reference. Studies social attitudes, cultural perspectives, and social-institutional factors associated with death and dying. Explores aspects of end-of-life issues, bereavement, and the afterlife.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Describe patterns of social attitudes and variations of cultural perspectives on death and dying.
- Analyze the influence of social institutions and the resulting responses to issues surrounding death and dying.
- Explain the impact of age at death, illness, and other causes of death as social variables.
- Describe socio-cultural variations in death rituals and beliefs associated with the afterlife.
- Identify end of life issues and necessary related decisions.
- Discuss socio-cultural variations encircling bereavement and mourning.
