SOC 232 Death and Dying: A Socio-Cultural Perspective

Introduces the study of death and dying from a socio-cultural frame of reference. Studies social attitudes, cultural perspectives, and social-institutional factors associated with death and dying. Explores aspects of end-of-life issues, bereavement, and the afterlife.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115  (or higher), or completion of WR 090  (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe patterns of social attitudes and variations of cultural perspectives on death and dying.
  2. Analyze the influence of social institutions and the resulting responses to issues surrounding death and dying.
  3. Explain the impact of age at death, illness, and other causes of death as social variables.
  4. Describe socio-cultural variations in death rituals and beliefs associated with the afterlife.
  5. Identify end of life issues and necessary related decisions.
  6. Discuss socio-cultural variations encircling bereavement and mourning.

  1. Apply analytical skills to social phenomena in order to understand human behavior.
  2. Apply knowledge and experience to foster personal growth and better appreciate the diverse social world in which we live.
