SPN 160 Spanish for Educators Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Obtain the base of academic language to be a successful bilingual teacher in Spanish and English. Gain Spanish skills in academic topics of math, science and language arts, plus classroom management vocabulary and strategy. Ideal for Education majors.
Prerequisite: SPN 103 with a grade of C or better; 3 years of high school Spanish; or equivalent experience. Instructor will assess student background when needed. Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Use classroom management vocabulary and phrases in a culturally appropriate way in Spanish.
- Initiate and sustain interaction with students in academic areas and classroom topics in Spanish.
- Initiate, respond, and sustain communication with parents and the community related to student and academic needs in Spanish.
- Use Spanish academic language in specific topic areas, such as language arts, math and science. Integrate vocabulary and grammar into the classroom context.
- Interpret main ideas from classroom communication in Spanish and understand that direct translation is often inappropriate. Adjust communication to use appropriate word choices rather than direct translation.
- Confidently speak, understand, read and write Spanish in academic settings.
Cultural Literacy Outcome:
- Identify and analyze complex practices, values, and beliefs and the culturally and historically defined meanings of difference.
