SPN 160 Spanish for Educators

Obtain the base of academic language to be a successful bilingual teacher in Spanish and English. Gain Spanish skills in academic topics of math, science and language arts, plus classroom management vocabulary and strategy. Ideal for Education majors.

Prerequisite: SPN 103 with a grade of C or better; 3 years of high school Spanish; or equivalent experience. Instructor will assess student background when needed. Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:

Use classroom management vocabulary and phrases in a culturally appropriate way in Spanish.
Initiate and sustain interaction with students in academic areas and classroom topics in Spanish.
Initiate, respond, and sustain communication with parents and the community related to student and academic needs in Spanish.
Use Spanish academic language in specific topic areas, such as language arts, math and science. Integrate vocabulary and grammar into the classroom context.
Interpret main ideas from classroom communication in Spanish and understand that direct translation is often inappropriate. Adjust communication to use appropriate word choices rather than direct translation.
Confidently speak, understand, read and write Spanish in academic settings.

Identify and analyze complex practices, values, and beliefs and the culturally and historically defined meanings of difference.
