SPN 214 Heritage Spanish 1 Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Develops reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills that emphasize critical thinking and professional use of Spanish. Builds student identity and pride in Hispanic cultures, and deepens understanding and appreciation of cultural and linguistic diversity. All interaction takes place in Spanish. Offers students the opportunity to prepare for and obtain the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher) with a grade of C or better or consent of instructor, and Native Spanish speaker (grew up speaking Spanish at home). Students are expected to be familiar with the written language. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate a mastery of the Spanish orthographic, accentuation, and punctuation systems.
- Interpret short authentic written texts.
- Write short passages that communicate ideas in a clear and understandable manner.
- Communicate effectively in standard spoken Spanish.
- Describe several historical, traditional, and literary aspects of Hispanic culture.
- Demonstrate ability to listen to, comprehend, interpret, and react to authentic audio and video selections and spoken language in a variety of settings, dialects and discourses.
Statewide General Education Outcomes:
- Interpret and engage in Arts and Letters, making use of the creative process to enrich the quality of life.
- Critically analyze values and ethics within a range of human experience and expression to engage more fully in local and global issues.

- Orthography: alphabet, use of V, B, LL, Y, S, C, Z, rules of accentuation diphthongs, diacritics
- Phonetics: Syllable and tonic syllable
- Syntax: Vowels, definite/indefinite articles, nouns, adjectives, gender and number
- Semantics: The verb to be
- Grammatical tenses: Present, progressive, preterit, imperfect, future, conditional
