SPN 216 Heritage Spanish 3 Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Develops reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills that emphasize critical thinking and professional use of Spanish. Builds student identity and pride in Hispanic cultures, and deepens understanding and appreciation of cultural and linguistic diversity. All interaction takes place in Spanish. Offers students the opportunity to prepare for and obtain the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy in Spanish.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instruction; and Native Spanish speaker (grew up speaking Spanish at home). Students are expected to be familiar with the written language. Recommended: SPN 215 with a grade of C or better.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate a mastery of the Spanish orthographic, accentuation, punctuation, morphological, and syntactic systems.
- Interpret longer authentic written texts.
- Write longer passages that are logical, coherent, meaningful, and persuasive.
- Communicate effectively in standard spoken Spanish.
- Describe several historical, traditional, and literary aspects of Hispanic culture .
- Demonstrate ability to listen to, comprehend, interpret and react to authentic audio and video selections and spoken language in a variety of settings, dialects and discourses.
Statewide General Education Outcomes:
- Interpret and engage in Arts and Letters, making use of the creative process to enrich the quality of life.
- Critically analyze values and ethics within a range of human experience and expression to engage more fully in local and global issues.
