SSC 290 Introduction to Research

Credits: 4

Focuses on the basic skills essential to ethical conduct of research in the biomedical and social sciences. Covers research misconduct, conflict of interest, use of human and non-human animal subjects in research, research collaboration, peer review, data acquisition and ownership, responsible authorship in publishing, the scientist as a responsible member of society, contemporary and historical issues in biomedical ethics, and the environment and societal impacts of scientific research.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115  (or higher), or completion of WR 090  (or higher) with a grade of C or better; and consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Discuss the need and importance of ethical standards for research involving human and non-human animal subjects. 
  2. Formulate original ideas and participate in inquiry, critical thinking, and objective written and oral communication. 
  3. Critically read and communicate information found in scientific literature. 
  4. Consider the range of available biomedical research topics and generate an original statement of research interest. 
  5. Explain the importance of IRBs, confidentiality and protecting vulnerable populations in human research. 
  6. Explain the importance of responsible conduct in science and identify possible sources of bias and conflict of interest. 
  7. Discuss the interaction between science and culture with historical examples. 
  8. Assess the fit of potential mentors.
