BA 225 Excel for Accounting

Credits: 4

Presents the use of basic and advanced functions of electronic spreadsheets as they relate to the accounting profession and to financial applications. Includes review of Excel formulas and formatting using templates and using spreadsheet applications to compute financial outcomes. Relates spreadsheet applications to financial accounting, managerial accounting, budgeting, and audit activities.

Prerequisite: Placement into MTH 070  or higher; or completion of MTH 060  or higher; and BA 211 ; and computer literacy; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.)
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Design schedules to compute inventory balances, depreciation amounts, and bond amortization costs.
  2. Use Excel financial formulas to compute the results of financial activities.
  3. Prepare financial statements.
  4. Export and reformat data from accounting software applications.
  5. Evaluate the outcomes of financial activities and projected outcomes of alternative decisions through computing and analyzing “what if” scenarios and time value of money results.
  6. Prepare budgets.
  7. Prepare variance analysis of financial statements and budgets.
  8. Construct spreadsheet presentations that are readable, logical, visually appealing, and appropriate for financial reporting.
