MUS 211 Music Theory 4 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 2 Credits: 3
Expands upon the theoretical concepts introduced in the first year of Music Theory. Covers common-practice melody, harmony, and voice leading, and demonstrates their analytical and compositional uses.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher); and completion of MUS 113 ; or consent of the instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.) Student Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the fundamentals of part-writing and be able to complete and create four-part exercises.
- Understand the fundamentals of harmonic function and progression.
- Compose four-part exercises using all diatonic triads and seventh chords.
- Identify secondary function chords and incorporate them into written exercises.
- Identify various diatonic modulatory techniques.
- Analyze and compose traditional forms including binary, ternary, sonata, rondo, and sonatarondo.
- Sing tonal melodies using movable do and do-based minor with increased chromaticism.
