MUS 211 Music Theory 4

Expands upon the theoretical concepts introduced in the first year of Music Theory. Covers common-practice melody, harmony, and voice leading, and demonstrates their analytical and compositional uses.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115  (or higher), or completion of WR 090  (or higher); and completion of MUS 113 ; or consent of the instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.)
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Understand the fundamentals of part-writing and be able to complete and create four-part exercises. 
  2. Understand the fundamentals of harmonic function and progression. 
  3. Compose four-part exercises using all diatonic triads and seventh chords. 
  4. Identify secondary function chords and incorporate them into written exercises. 
  5. Identify various diatonic modulatory techniques. 
  6. Analyze and compose traditional forms including binary, ternary, sonata, rondo, and sonatarondo. 
  7. Sing tonal melodies using movable do and do-based minor with increased chromaticism.
