SLP 287 Clinical Documentation and Materials Management for the SLPA


Lecture Hours: 3
Credits: 3

Covers the development and use of therapeutic teaching materials based on knowledge of communication disorders, speech production, clinical intervention, and normal language and cognitive development. Includes various approaches to documenting the results of intervention. Focuses on the use of developmental and behavioral models to produce materials and assessment of various intervention programs.

Prerequisite: SLP 180  with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Complete a portfolio to demonstrate knowledge and ability to create a lesson plan in speech and or language 
  2. Provide appropriate stimuli to elicit target behaviors
  3. Follow a treatment protocol using appropriate stimulus materials
  4. Describe/document clinically relevant behaviors of the client/student/patient 
  5. Develop intervention materials to support implementation of treatment goals and objectives.
  6. Prepare age-appropriate and culturally sensitive treatment materials appropriate for the developmental age and communication disorder.
  7. Prepare and maintain client charts, records, writing progress reports using appropriate terminology of the profession
  8. Accurately describe the requirements for state licensing of SLPAs 
  9. Describe ASHA’s Certification program for SLPAs 
  10. Complete a HIPAA examination with passing success 
  11. Complete a Universal Precautions quiz with passing success 
  12. Locate the state speech and hearing association for your state
