SLP 292 Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Introduces augmentative communication and technologies associated with the field of communication disorders. Examines characteristics of various augmentative communication systems and explores communication strategies related to the needs of the users. Discusses person-centered intervention and problem solving strategies. Includes case studies and designing materials that demonstrate the effective use of assistive technology, including alternative augmentative communication in relation to school, work, recreation, home, or community environments.

Prerequisite: SLP 180  and SLP 183 , each with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe various AAC devices, new technology and systems available.
  2. Define and demonstrate visual communication strategies and recommendations for clients.
  3. Identify various levels of AAC and Assistive Technology- low tech strategies to high tech options.
  4. Create and describe a Visual Communication System in various settings.
  5. Describe Person-Centered intervention and problem-solving approaches.
  6. Identify possible barriers and considerations for clients.
  7. Describe the relationship between literacy and AAC with various clients in a variety of settings.
  8. Identify the various team members and other professionals that are involved with clients who use AAC technologies.
