ART 224 Type Design 1

Introduces the study of typography and its importance in contemporary culture and in the design of visual communications.

Prerequisite: VC 111  and VC 114 , each with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify the major type classifications and trace the historic development of type. 
  2. Use industry standard type vocabulary and units of measure in working with type. 
  3. Apply legibility and readability criteria in typographic use. 
  4. Select typefaces to communicate attitude and style as well as an intended message to a target audience. 
  5. Distinguish well designed typography as used in visual communications. 
  6. Analyze distinguishing characteristics of typefaces in the identification of fonts. 
  7. Apply effective type design principles to a variety of projects. 
  8. Discuss the significance of letterforms and glyphs in art, and popular culture as well as in graphic design.
